What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the practice of inserting extremely thin, solid, metallic needles on specific located points on the body surface, which are then stimulated through gentle and specific movements of the practitioner’s hands or with electrical stimulation. Oriental Medicine is the foundation for both the theory and practice of acupuncture. It is a comprehensive natural healthcare system that has been utilized in Asian countries for over 5000 years to preserve health, diagnose, treat, and prevent ailments.
What is Qi and How does it Move?
Doctors of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine believe that over 2000 acupuncture points on the human body are linked by channels or meridians. Qi (pronounced “Chee”), or life energy, flows throughout the body via meridian, which surface on the skin at specific points and nourishes every cell, tissue, organ, and gland. Qi helps to animate the body and protect it from illness, pain, and disease. Flow is disrupted when the channels are blocked, and illness is generated. Acupuncture at specific locations is thought to promote the flow of Qi, hence improving health.
Imagine the Qi as water running through a garden hose, nourishing flowers so they can grow and flourish. The flowers would ultimately wilt and wither if the water supply were to be reduced.
